Mixing Bedding Fabrics

Bedding guide

Mixing bedding fabrics

You can put linen, cotton percale, sateen and double gauze on the same bed, and it often looks better than one fabric throughout. The rule is simple: contrast the textures, keep the colours related. Our builder lets you choose the fabric for the duvet cover, the fitted sheet and the pillowcases separately, and adds the set to your bag in one go.

Mix your own bed

Starts with a Terracotta linen duvet cover over an Off White percale sheet and pillowcases. Change any fabric or colour in the builder.

Pieces that mix well

Each photograph is the variant itself. Every piece is sold separately, so any combination is possible.

Which fabrics go together

Four fabrics, three places on the bed. These are the combinations that read as deliberate.

Duvet cover Fitted sheet Pillowcases Why it works
French linen Plain Cotton percale Percale or linen Relaxed linen on top, a crisp, cheaper sheet underneath
Cloud Cotton Cloud Cotton Silky Cotton sateen Soft crinkle against a smooth, lustrous face
Plain Cotton percale Plain Cotton percale Silky Cotton sateen A crisp bed with a sheen at the head
Silky Cotton sateen Plain Cotton percale Silky Cotton sateen Smooth on top, matt underneath

Keep one thing constant. If the fabrics change, hold the colour family; if the colours change, hold the fabric. Sizes are the same across all four fabrics, so any duvet cover fits the same duvet and any fitted sheet fits the same mattress.

For the differences between the fabrics themselves, see linen vs cotton bedding, percale vs sateen and our bedding fabrics guide. For colour pairings in one fabric, see how to mix bedding colours.

Can you mix linen and cotton bedding?

Yes, and it is the most common mix. A linen duvet cover over a cotton percale fitted sheet gives you the look of a linen bed where it shows most, at a lower price than linen throughout. The two wash together at the same care settings in our care guide.

Questions about mixing bedding fabrics

Can you mix linen and cotton bedding?

Yes. A linen duvet cover over a cotton percale fitted sheet is the most common mix. It gives you the look of linen where it shows most, at a lower price than linen throughout.

Do different fabrics fit the same duvet?

Yes. Our duvet covers, fitted sheets and pillowcases use the same sizes in all four fabrics, so any duvet cover fits the same duvet and any fitted sheet fits the same mattress.

Can I buy a mixed-fabric set in one order?

Yes. In the colour combo builder you choose the fabric and colour for the duvet cover, the fitted sheet and the pillowcases separately, and the whole set goes into your bag together.

Should the colours match if the fabrics are different?

Keep one thing constant: either the colour family or the fabric. Changing both at once is harder to get right.

Which fabric is best for pillowcases?

Silky Cotton sateen is the smoothest face for a pillowcase, and it mixes well with a percale or double gauze bed.
