Stonewashed French flax, cut and hemmed as a tablecloth. Heavier in the hand than a cotton cloth, with the slub and the irregular grain that only flax gives — the cloth you put down for Sunday lunch, for Christmas, for the dinners you lay the table properly for.

It creases, from the first wash, and it stays creased. That is what linen does, and it is most of the charm: put it on the table straight off the line and it looks lived-in rather than laundered. If you want it smoother, iron it on the reverse while it is still damp.

What flax gives back is weight and age. It hangs off the edge of the table instead of standing away from it, it takes a spill without going translucent, and it is better in its third year than its first.

Finding your size

Measure your table and add 30 cm to both the length and the width — that gives a 15 cm fall all the way round, the same relaxed drop as our cotton cloths. Find your table's width first, then its length.
