Stonewashed French flax, cut and hemmed as a cloth rather than a length of fabric. Heavier in the hand than a cotton cloth, with the slub and the irregular grain that only flax gives — the cloth you put down when the table is the room's centrepiece rather than its turnover.

It creases. Permanently, and from the first wash. That is what linen does and we are not going to pretend otherwise. This cloth will not give you a hard, pressed, uniform surface — so if a banquet finish is what a service needs, ask us before you buy.

What flax gives back is weight and age. It hangs instead of standing away from the table, it takes a spill without going translucent, and it is better in its third year than its first — which is not true of much else you put on a table.

Finding the size

A cloth is the table plus twice the drop, and ours are cut to a full 45 cm drop — the fall that reads as a linen cloth rather than a cover. So the rule is table + 90 cm in both directions, and that is what the figures below are worked to. If you want a shorter, more domestic fall of 15 to 20 cm a side, the same cloth covers a table 50 to 60 cm larger in each direction than the table says.

Round tables

One round cloth, Ø180 cm (Ø71 in), which at the same 45 cm drop covers a round table up to about 90 cm. Seats 4. On a 120 cm round it still works, with a shorter 30 cm fall. A square cloth also sits well on a round top — the corners simply hang lower than the sides, which is the look most people are after. If you want an even hem the whole way round at another diameter, we cut circles to order.
