Modal Cloud or Mulberry Silk: Which Set Should You Actually Buy?
Share
We sell both, so this is not a sales pitch for one over the other. It is the answer we give when someone asks in an email, which happens most weeks.
The short version: if you are buying one set and you want to wear it most nights, buy Modal Cloud. If you are buying a second set, or a gift, or something for the nights that feel like an occasion, buy silk. Here is the reasoning.
Price sits at the centre of it
A long Modal Cloud set is £50, a short set £45. A 19 momme mulberry silk set starts around £120 and the 22 momme range goes higher. That is not a small gap, and it changes how people treat the garment.
The uncomfortable truth about expensive sleepwear is that it often gets saved. A £200 silk set that lives in a drawer waiting for a worthy evening has a terrible cost per wear. A £50 set worn twice a week for three years has an excellent one. Buy the fabric you will actually put on.

How they feel is genuinely different
Silk is cool on contact. It conducts heat away from your skin quickly on first touch, which is the sensation people describe as luxurious when they get into bed. It is smooth, it has weight and a liquid drape, and it looks like nothing else.
Modal is light and dry. It absorbs and releases moisture more readily than cotton, so the surface against your skin stays dry for longer through the night. It has less weight than silk and more stretch, so it moves with you rather than draping over you.
Neither is better. They are different sensations, and people usually know within one night which they prefer.
The care difference is the real decider
| Modal Cloud | Mulberry silk | |
|---|---|---|
| Washing | Machine, 30°C, gentle | Hand wash or delicates cycle in a bag |
| Detergent | Ordinary liquid detergent | pH-neutral, never biological |
| Drying | Tumble low or hang | Air dry only, out of sun |
| Ironing | Never needed | Cool, inside out, if at all |
That biological detergent line matters more than it sounds. Silk is a protein fibre, and the enzymes in biological detergent are designed to break down protein. It is the most common way people quietly ruin a silk set.
If you wash sleepwear twice a week and you are not going to change that, silk will become a chore. Be honest with yourself at the point of purchase rather than three weeks in.
Where each one wins outright
- You run hot. Modal, and a short set. Moisture handling beats contact coolness over a whole night.
- You want the bed to feel like a hotel. Silk. Nothing else does that.
- You are buying a gift and unsure of taste. Modal, in a solid colour, sized up.
- It is a milestone gift. Silk, at 19 momme or above — like the 19 momme Midnight Black long set.
- You have a newborn, or a washing machine that runs constantly. Modal, two sets, in rotation.
- You want it to last a decade. Silk, cared for properly, will outlive everything else in the drawer.

The answer most people arrive at
Two Modal Cloud sets in rotation, and one silk set for the nights that warrant it. The rotation is what makes the modal last; the silk is what makes the drawer feel like a choice rather than a uniform.
If you are starting from nothing, start with one long Modal Cloud set and see whether you reach for it. You will know inside a fortnight.
Sizes run UK 6 to 28 across both fabrics — measurements are on the size guide, and if you are between sizes, size up.
