How Often Should You Change Your Bed Sheets? (And How Many Sets You Need)

Short answer. Change your bed sheets once a week, and never leave them longer than two weeks. Pillowcases are worth changing once or twice a week, and the duvet insert only needs washing two or three times a year. To manage that without a same-day wash and dry, keep at least two sets of bedding per bed.

Most people know sheets should be changed regularly, and very few are sure what regularly means. This guide gives a clear schedule for every piece on the bed, then the question that decides whether you can stick to it: how many sets you actually need.

How often to wash each piece of bedding

Piece How often Notes
Fitted sheet Weekly Up to two weeks at most
Flat sheet (if you use one) Weekly With the fitted sheet
Duvet cover Weekly Every two weeks if you use a flat sheet
Pillowcases Once or twice a week More often than the rest
Duvet insert 2 to 3 times a year Dry it completely
Pillows 2 to 3 times a year Check the label first

Why once a week?

Every night, body oils, skin cells and anything left on your skin or hair work their way into the weave. None of it is visible after one night, but after a couple of weeks pale sheets start to look dull and yellowed, and the fabric loses the feel you bought it for. A regular 30°C wash keeps a set looking and feeling like itself for far longer than an occasional hot wash to rescue it.

When to change them sooner

  • In hot weather, when you sleep warmer.
  • After illness.
  • If a pet sleeps on the bed.
  • If you go to bed without showering, or wearing make-up or hair products.

Why pillowcases need changing more often

Your face and hair spend the whole night on the pillowcase, so it collects more than the rest of the bed. Changing pillowcases twice a week is an easy habit, and it is why we sell pillowcases in pairs as well as in sets.

How many sets of bedding do you need?

Two sets per bed is the minimum. One is on the bed while the other is washed, dried and put away. Without a second set, changing the bed means stripping, washing, drying and remaking it on the same day, which is the main reason sheets stay on longer than they should.

Three sets suit you if:

  • you line-dry, so a set can take a day or two to dry;
  • you want one set spare for guests or emergencies;
  • you like changing the colour with the season.
Household Sets to own
One bed 2 sets
One bed, line-drying 3 sets
Main bed plus a guest bed 2 for the main bed, 1 for the guest bed
Children's beds 2 per bed, plus a spare fitted sheet

A second set also makes both last longer

With two sets in rotation, each one is washed half as often. The wear is shared between them instead of falling on one set every week.

The second set does not have to match the first

A spare set is a chance to try another colour or fabric. Many people keep a crisp Plain Cotton percale for warm months and a softer Cloud Cotton or Linen for the rest of the year. In the bundle builder you can choose the fabric and colour of each piece and see the price as you go. A complete Plain Cotton double set, with fitted sheet, duvet cover and two pillowcases, is £59.90.

Fitted sheets wear first

The fitted sheet takes the most friction and is the first piece to wear. A spare fitted sheet is the cheapest way to stretch a set, and ours are cut to fit mattresses up to 35 cm deep.

How to wash your bedding so it lasts

Every bedding fabric we make washes at 30°C or colder on a gentle cycle. Skip fabric softener, tumble dry on low and take the bedding out while slightly damp. The full routine for each fabric is in our care guide.

Questions people ask about changing sheets

How often should you change your bed sheets?

Once a week is the usual advice, and every two weeks is the longest most people would leave them. Change them sooner in a heatwave, after illness, or if pets sleep on the bed.

How often should you wash pillowcases?

At least once a week, with the sheets. Many people change pillowcases twice a week, because the face and hair are in contact with them all night.

How many sets of bed sheets should you own?

Two sets per bed is the minimum: one on the bed and one in the wash or the cupboard. Three sets suit anyone who line-dries, washes less often, or wants a change of colour.

How often should you wash a duvet?

The duvet insert itself needs washing only two or three times a year, as long as it always has a cover on. The cover is washed weekly with the sheets.

Is it OK to change bed sheets every two weeks?

For one person who showers before bed, every two weeks is the outer limit most guidance accepts. Pillowcases are still worth changing weekly.
