Double is the most common bed size in the UK, and the one with the most confusing numbers attached to it, because the duvet, the fitted sheet and the flat sheet are all different sizes. Every double bed measurement, in cm and inches

These are the sizes we cut. Duvet covers are made in the four standard UK sizes, and a double duvet cover is 200 × 200 cm in every fabric.

What size duvet for a double bed?

A double duvet is 200 × 200 cm: square, and 65 cm wider than the mattress. That extra width is the drop, the part that hangs over each side. On a 135 cm double it comes to about 32 cm per side, which covers the side of an average mattress and stops the duvet from sliding off one edge during the night.

The duvet is 10 cm longer than the mattress, so the foot end sits just over the edge rather than hanging down. If you like the duvet to reach the floor at the foot, that is what a flat sheet and a throw are for.

Can you put a king size duvet on a double bed?

Yes, and plenty of couples do. A 230 × 220 cm king duvet on a double gives about 47 cm of drop each side, 15 cm more than a double duvet, so there is more to share. The trade-offs: it can look oversized on a low bed, and you have to buy a king duvet cover for it. The cover always matches the duvet, not the bed.

Double fitted sheet size

A double fitted sheet matches the mattress: 135 × 190 cm. Width and length are never the problem. Depth is. Our fitted sheets are cut for mattresses up to 35 cm deep, which covers most pocket-sprung and memory-foam doubles, including one with a thin topper. Measure your mattress from its base to the top surface, and include a topper if it stays on the bed. Over 35 cm, take the deeper option when you build the set.

Double flat sheet size

A double flat sheet is 230 × 260 cm. It needs to be far bigger than the mattress because it goes over the top and tucks under three sides. On a 135 cm bed, 230 cm leaves about 47 cm each side to tuck in.

Double, small double or continental double?

Beds bought in Europe or from IKEA are usually 140 × 200 cm. A UK double fitted sheet is 10 cm too short for one and will pull off a corner. For those beds we cut sheets to your measurements, in any of our fabrics.

How many pillowcases on a double bed?

Two standard 50 × 75 cm pillowcases. Every double bedding set we make comes with two. If you sleep with four pillows, add a second pair of pillowcases in the same fabric.
