Yes. Modal fibre is finer and smoother than most cotton, so the fabric feels silkier and has less surface texture. Very good cotton can be extremely soft too, but it has a drier, more matte feel. Most people can tell the two apart in the dark.

Is modal more breathable than cotton?

They are close. Both let air through, and both take moisture into the fibre rather than leaving it on the skin the way polyester does. Modal absorbs more moisture than cotton and tends to feel less clammy while it does. Cotton, especially in an open weave, has a drier, crisper feel.
