Sleepwear is bought unseen more often than almost any other garment, which makes the question of where to buy it more consequential than it sounds. Here is how the four routes actually differ, and how to read a product page when you cannot put your hands on the cloth.

Where can I buy high-quality sleepwear?

The four routes are specialist sleepwear labels, department stores, luxury multi-brand retailers and the brands' own websites — and they are good at different things. Specialists put the most money into fabric because it is the only thing they make. Department stores let you feel the weight before buying. Multi-brand retailers carry the broadest range but price it highest. Buying direct from a brand usually gets you the full size range and the clearest specifications.

If quality of cloth is the priority, a specialist buying one fabric at volume will almost always beat a generalist buying forty.

Where can I buy good quality sleepwear without spending a fortune?

Look at modal and cotton rather than silk, and buy from a specialist direct. The single biggest price jump in sleepwear is the move to silk, and it is a jump in raw material cost rather than in construction — a well-made modal set at around £50 and a silk set at £250 can be sewn to the same standard. If budget is the constraint, spend it on fabric weight and fit rather than on fibre romance.

How to judge sleepwear on a product page

• Fibre content with ratios. 19 momme mulberry silk or 95% modal, 5% elastane. Not silky feel, not premium blend.
• A weight number. Momme for silk, GSM or thread count for cotton. A seller who knows their cloth publishes it.
• A measurement chart. Actual centimetres, not just S/M/L, and ideally garment measurements rather than body ones.
• Photographs of the garment flat. Styled shots hide fit; a flat shot shows the cut.
• The care instruction. If it says cold wash, they have tested it. If it says 40 degrees on silk, they have not.
• Who pays return postage. Find this before you buy, not after.

What are some luxury brands of pyjamas?

The luxury pyjama market breaks into three groups: British heritage houses that grew out of tailoring and dressing gowns, silk-led London and Paris labels built on print and colour, and newer direct-to-customer brands competing on fit and transparency rather than on archive. Derek Rose, Olivia von Halle and Hanro are the names most consistently cited across those groups.

Each is strongest in a different fabric, which is why comparing them directly rarely helps. Decide on the cloth first.

What are the most luxurious nightwear brands?

The most luxurious nightwear is heavyweight mulberry silk, hand-finished, and the brands known for it are the silk houses rather than the generalists. What makes a set genuinely luxurious rather than expensively branded is measurable: momme weight of 19 or above, French seams or flat-felled seams rather than overlocking, real piping rather than printed trim, and mother-of-pearl or equivalent buttons rather than plastic.

What are the best luxury pyjamas?

Heavyweight mulberry silk at 19 momme or above, in a cut that fits you. That is the whole answer. Below 19 momme silk is too light to hang correctly and too thin to survive regular washing; above 22 momme it becomes heavy enough that some people find it warm. The range between the two is where the good sets live, and print is taste.

Canada is served mainly by the luxury multi-brand retailers and by the international brands' own sites with international shipping — most major silk labels ship there directly, and the major department store groups carry the heritage houses. Duties and taxes on import are the thing to check before you order, because they are frequently more than the shipping.
