Why Is Linen Bedding So Expensive? What You Pay For, and When It Is Worth It
Short answer. Linen costs more because flax is slower and harder to turn into cloth than cotton: it is pulled, retted, broken and combed by stages, and the yarn weaves more slowly. A double linen set here is £139.90, against £59.90 for the same set in Plain Cotton. Whether it is worth it depends on the bed you want, not on linen being better.

Linen is the most expensive fabric we sell, and people ask about it more than any other. The honest answer has two halves. Part of the price is the fibre, which really does take more work. The other part is what you get for it: a heavier, textured, relaxed cloth that some people love and others find too rough and too creased. This guide covers both, so you can decide before you spend.
How much more does linen cost?
Here is the same double set, fitted sheet, duvet cover and two pillowcases, in each of our four bedding fabrics.
| Fabric | Weave | Double set | Per night, first year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain Cotton | 200 TC percale | £59.90 | about 16p |
| Cloud Cotton | 200 TC double gauze | £79.90 | about 22p |
| Silky Cotton | 300 TC sateen | £104.90 | about 29p |
| Linen | 170 GSM stonewashed flax | £139.90 | about 38p |
The last column divides the price by 365 nights and stops there. It does not assume the set lasts any particular number of years, because that depends on how it is washed and how many sets it shares the job with.
Why linen costs more than cotton
Flax is slow to harvest and process
Cotton grows as a fluffy boll that is picked, cleaned and spun. Flax is a stalk, and the fibre sits inside it. The plants are pulled from the ground rather than cut, so the fibre runs the full length of the stem. They are then left lying in the field for several weeks to ret, which loosens the fibre from the woody core. After that the stalks are broken, scutched and hackled (combed) in stages to free long, clean fibre. Each of those steps takes time, and a wet or dry season changes how the retting goes.
Linen yarn is harder to weave
Flax fibre has very little stretch. On a loom that means more broken threads and slower running than with cotton, and slower weaving means cloth costs more to make.
Ours is stonewashed after weaving
Our linen is 100% French flax, woven at 170 GSM in an open plain weave and then stonewashed: washed with stones so that it arrives soft, slightly rumpled and pre-shrunk rather than stiff. That is an extra finishing step that unwashed linen does not pay for.
Heavier cloth, more fibre in every piece
Linen is a heavier cloth than most cotton bedding, so every duvet cover uses more fibre by weight. That is also why it feels substantial on the bed rather than floaty.

Why linen has no thread count
Thread count is the number of threads in a square inch of cloth. It works for cotton because cotton yarn can be spun very fine, so more threads can mean a denser, smoother cloth. Linen yarn is far thicker, so a good linen might have a thread count under 100, and the number tells you almost nothing. Linen is described by weight instead, in grams per square metre (GSM). Ours is 170 GSM. If you see a linen sold on a high thread count, treat the number with suspicion.
What you get for the extra money
- Texture. A matte, slightly slubby surface you can feel, not a smooth one.
- Weight. A heavier cloth that drapes over the bed and stays put.
- Air and moisture. An open plain weave that moves air freely, from a fibre that absorbs moisture readily.
- A relaxed look. It creases the moment it is used, and that is how it is meant to look. It needs no ironing.
- It softens. Linen gets softer with washing. Ours starts softer because it is stonewashed, and our guide on how to soften linen bedding covers the rest.
When linen is not worth it
Linen is the wrong choice for some people, and it is better to know before you buy.
- You want a smooth, crisp bed. Plain Cotton percale gives that hotel-sheet feel at £59.90 for a double set.
- You want a soft sheen. Silky Cotton is a 300 TC sateen and costs £35 less than linen on a double set.
- You want soft and light from the first night. Cloud Cotton is a double gauze, rumpled like linen but lighter and cheaper. Our guide to what cloud cotton is explains the difference.
- Creases bother you. Linen will never look pressed.
How to pay less for linen
Buy the set. A double linen set is £139.90. The same fitted sheet (£59.90), duvet cover (£79.90) and pillowcase pair (£29.90) bought separately come to £169.70, so the set saves £29.80.
Put linen where you touch it. A linen fitted sheet is £59.90 for a double. Paired with a cotton duvet cover, you sleep on linen for much less than a full set. The bundle builder lets you mix fabrics piece by piece and shows the price as you go.
Questions people ask about the price of linen
Why is linen bedding more expensive than cotton?
Flax takes longer to turn into cloth than cotton does. The plants are pulled rather than cut, left in the field to ret, then broken and combed out in stages, and linen yarn weaves more slowly. Ours is also stonewashed after weaving. Each step adds cost before the fabric reaches a bed.
Is linen bedding worth the money?
It is if you want a textured, relaxed bed and do not mind creases. A double linen set at £139.90, used every night for a year, works out at about 38p a night. If you want a smooth, crisp bed, cotton percale does that for less.
Does linen bedding have a thread count?
Not in a useful sense. Linen yarn is much thicker than cotton yarn, so linen is described by its weight in grams per square metre (GSM) instead. Ours is 170 GSM.
How can I buy linen bedding for less?
Buy the set rather than the separate pieces, or put linen only where you touch it most. A double linen set is £139.90, against £169.70 for the same fitted sheet, duvet cover and pillowcase pair bought separately. A linen fitted sheet on its own is £59.90.
Does linen bedding crease?
Yes, always. Creasing is part of how linen looks, and no amount of ironing turns it into a flat fabric. If you want a smooth bed, choose a cotton percale or sateen instead.
