Christmas Pyjamas That Aren't Novelty: Grown-Up Sets and Matching Gifts

A Christmas pyjama set is one of the most photographed things anyone wears all year, and one of the least worn once January arrives. A reindeer jumper print or a "Nice List" slogan looks right for a fortnight and then goes to the back of the drawer. What makes Christmas pyjamas "not novelty"?

Colour does the work, not the motif

Red, deep green, navy, black and gold read as Christmas on their own. A plain or quietly printed set in one of those colours looks festive in a photo next to a tree, and looks just as good on a wet Tuesday in March. Snowmen and puddings don't.

A print you would choose anyway

If there is a print, ask whether you would buy it in June. Bows, stars, hearts and animal prints pass that test; a Christmas-jumper repeat usually doesn't. A useful rule from our gifting page: buy prints for people whose taste you know, and solids for people whose taste you are guessing at.

A fabric that lasts past one season

Most novelty sets are made to be worn a handful of times. A set in mulberry silk, Modal Cloud (95% modal, 5% elastane) or 100% cotton is made to be washed and worn every week, which is the point of buying one that isn't seasonal.

Ribbon Red is the closest thing we make to a Christmas set, and it has no Christmas motif at all: red bows on a white ground, with a short-sleeve, button-front top over full-length, wide-leg trousers. Starry Night and Disco Era Cheetah bring gold onto black, which suits a party season without saying "Christmas" on it.

For a silk set, Velvet Green and Midnight Black are the two most wintry colours in the mulberry silk range. Both are 19 momme mulberry silk, with a notched collar, a chest pocket and contrast piping, and both come in UK 6 to UK 22.

The same print for two adults

The Navy Zebra crewneck set is our clearest matching pair. Coordinated rather than identical

Some couples prefer sets that go together without being the same. Dressing a family

We don't currently make one print in every size from toddler to adult, so the easiest way to dress a family for Christmas morning is by colour rather than by print: the adults in Navy Zebra, and the children in a long set from our kids' range, such as Solid Sage Green (£32.90, 100% cotton with white piping) or Dinosaurs (£39.90). Kids' sizes run from 1–2 years to 11–12 years.

If a parent and child want exactly the same print, two of ours are made in both women's and kids' sizes.
