Two hundred thread count percale, cut long and hemmed on all four sides — the same cloth we weave our sheets from, in the piece the table shows most. A runner is what you use when the table itself is worth looking at: it takes the centre, holds the candles and the flowers, and leaves the wood showing at each setting.

Two widths, and they do different jobs. At 45 cm the runner is a working surface — platters, a candle line, a bowl at either end — and it is the width to buy for a dining table you actually serve from. At 30 cm it is a stripe rather than a surface, which is what a narrow table wants, or a table you want to leave mostly bare.

It is also the quickest way to change how a room reads. Swapping a runner between services takes a fraction of the labour of re-clothing every table, and on a bare table it is the one piece that has to go through the wash nightly.

Finding the length

Allow about 15 cm of overhang at each end: measure the table, add 30 cm, and take the next length up. A runner that stops short of the table's ends reads as a mistake; one that pools on the floor reads as a cloth that did not fit. Both widths come in all three lengths.
